Beefing up home security is 'essential' for Bonfire Night
28 October 2008
A leading price comparison website has today (October 28th) urged Britons to be vigilant about home security when Bonfire Night arrives. The evening of November 5th is always a joyously celebrated affair as families get together to go to firework displays or set off their own rockets in their gardens.
However, Darren Black, a home insurance expert at Confused.com, has warned homeowners that it also presents an opportunity for prowling burglars to strike.
He said: "Bonfire Night is one of the most lucrative nights of the year for burglars, as they know that many residents will be out at firework displays, thus making it easier for them to break into their homes.
"In addition, fireworks tend to drown out the sound of burglar alarms going off. It is important to make sure that all valuables are locked away."
Mr Black's comments come on the back of recent research by Norwich Union which suggested that a staggering 20 per cent of Britons do not lock their doors and windows at night.
Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes Night as it is sometimes known, celebrates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament on November 5th, 1605.
