Bodged DIY can diminish home value

15 April 2008
Sub-standard DIY work can diminish the value of your property, industry experts have warned.

The Halifax estimates that bodged home improvements wiped £350 million off the value of housing stock last year.

And, according to the Thrify Scot, inadequate repairs and maintenance can make your home less saleable.

Homeowners that attempt difficult jobs around the house could also be at risk of invalidating their home insurance.

"Trying to tackle certain areas you are not qualified for, such as electricals and plumbing, could invalidate your home insurance policy, leaving you liable for any subsequent damage," an official told the financial advice site.

"While breakage of some fittings - such as baths and glass in doors - is covered by most standard buildings insurance policies, you might need extra accidental damage cover to protect against DIY disasters such as drilling through pipes or spilling paint on carpets," he warned.

Getting in the professionals to perform tricky tasks is always recommended and carefully considered improvements such as installing double glazing can add significant value to your property.ADNFCR-1051-ID-18551718-ADNFCR
