Buyers rate home security and community spirit
17 April 2008
Home security and low local crime levels are "key factors" for prospective property buyers, according to a leading housing expert.Miles Shipman, commercial director of the real estate website Rightmove, said that the risk of being burgled was a major element in buying decisions.
The property expert highlighted the importance of neighbourhood watch schemes and local community spirit for many buyers.
"Crime is an important factor," he said, adding that "it's probably the more traditional locations that have the better track records".
"Areas with a neighbourhood watch and areas with a better track record on crime" would always be appealing, Mr Shipman continued.
Favourable burglary levels can help drive down home insurance costs, which is another "key factor" that buyers look for, he concluded.
Homeowners can make their homes safer by investing in a home security system, as well as tougher locks and double glazing to deter opportunist thieves.
