Celebrities driving green home improvement projects

04 September 2008
British homeowners are becoming increasingly environmentally-aware, with many shrugging off cynicism and being influenced by the examples of celebrities, it has been claimed.

Just recently, the Daily Telegraph reported that, in spite of Gordon Brown's pledge that all new homes will be carbon neutral by 2016, just a handful have been built to date.

Furthermore, thousands of people are seeing applications for planning permission to build eco-friendly homes being refused by local authorities.

However, according to Ideal Home Magazine, many people are no longer waiting for the government to act, but instead are taking the initiative themselves, with a significant number being persuaded by the example of celebrities to modify their homes.

"I think there's a healthy degree of cynicism about celebrities adopting the latest cult cause…but as a whole we're much more eco-aware than five years ago," the magazine's editorial director Isobel McKenzie-Price stated.

"Whether we're prepared to give up comfort for the environment is a question we don't yet know the answer to - but I think people are more aware of feeling that they should do something," she added.

One of the most notable examples of public figures carrying out eco-friendly work on their homes is David Cameron, whose property boasts renewable energy add-ons. ADNFCR-1051-ID-18765009-ADNFCR
