Concern for climate change but little action
15 May 2008
Three in four homeowners are concerned about the impact of their property on the environment, yet only one in ten believe their house is efficient enough. This is according to a new consumer poll by O2, which also shows that many lower income households are of the opinion that upgrades such as insulation and double glazing are unaffordable.
One in ten respondents said that such home improvements were the sole preserve of higher income families.
Robert McKinnon of the Energy Saving Trust is keen to dispell this myth.
"Many people just aren't aware that small changes can make a big difference and now is the perfect time to take action," he said.
"Simple things like installing cavity wall and loft insulation alone can cut bills by £250 per year and turning the thermostat down by one degree can cut bills by ten per cent."
The energy saving expert went on to point out that makeover schemes are available for households on lower incomes, to help them limit their fuel usage and slash their bills.
According to the Sun, double glazing can reduce the annual energy bill of the typical household by £90, reducing heat lost through windows by half.
