Conservatories and loft conversions 'add most value'

05 June 2007
Homeowners who try to increase the value of their home with a new kitchen or bathroom are making a mistake, according to a new survey.

The research, conducted by GE Money Home Lending, shows that a new kitchen and bathroom typically adds just £13,400 to the value of a property.

A conservatory and loft conversion, by contrast, increases a house's resale value by an average of £42,000 a time.

Giacomo Gigantiello, of GE Money Home Lending, commented that "homeowners planning improvements to their homes this summer to specifically increase the value of their property could be missing out on the most valuable additions".

"At a time of year when many are planning to improve the value and desirability of their homes, it is important that consumers appreciate and establish DIY and renovation tasks which will add the most equity to their particular home."

GE Money Home Lending's findings come shortly after a boom of television programmes about property renovation and redecoration.

These shows included Changing Rooms, Home Front, DIYSOS, Housecall and Real Rooms.ADNFCR-1051-ID-18169347-ADNFCR
