Home improvements rising amid relaxed planning laws
04 November 2008
New research released today (November 4th) has suggested that one in five Britons is set to take advantage of government plans to scrap planning permission for loft conversions. With house prices still on the slide in the current economic downturn, reports have suggested there is a growing trend of homeowners looking to improve rather than move.
Now Alliance and Leicester Personal Loans has underlined that argument by claiming that around 20 per cent are currently considering making an alteration to their loft.
This is perhaps unsurprising when one considers that studies by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors suggest that such a move could add £10,000 to the value of a property.
Mark Boyle, personal loans manager at the firm, said: "In an uncertain economic climate where homeowners are finding it too expensive to move house, the government's plans will be welcomed with open arms."
In addition to creating a loft conversion, home extensions such as conservatories are proving popular, while replacing doors, windows and even kitchens will all add to the attractiveness of a property when the time comes to sell.
