Home insurance claims 'up 250% on Bonfire Night'
04 November 2008
A leading home insurance provider has warned homeowners today (November 4th) that it is expecting a huge 250 per cent rise in the number of claims on Bonfire Night. The country will be celebrating with firework displays and bonfires tomorrow, but Tesco Home Insurance has explained that burglars could be out in force during the evening.
Having conducted a study relating to home security breaches during November 2007, the company found that there were two-and-a-half times more claims on the 5th than any other day.
As such, it is now advising Britons intending to head out to public displays to ensure that their burglar alarms are on and to leave security lights on to act as a deterrent.
Jim Bruce, head of home insurance at Tesco Personal Finance, said: "Bonfire Night is an enjoyable time of year for the family but make sure you take the necessary precautions to protect your property."
The most fireworks ever launched in a 30-second period is 56,405, a record belonging to the Fantastic Fireworks group and set in Plymouth on August 16th, 2006.
