Homeowners should 'use downturn in their favour'
11 November 2008
A leading home renovation information provider has claimed today (November 11th) that homeowners can use the economic downturn to their advantage. With the property market still struggling as house prices continue to slump, an increasing number of Britons are choosing to stay put in their homes as they wait to ride out the storm.
However, Chris Martin, an architect at theHousePlanner, has explained that the current situation represents an opportunity for adding extensions such as conservatories to a home.
He said: "A number of things mean you can turn this [people staying in their homes longer] to your advantage - the toughening economic climate means that architects and builders will price jobs more keenly."
In addition, Mr Martin pointed out to homeowners that with new-builds also currently at lower levels than usual, "you can get your work done more quickly".
Recent research from Alliance and Leicester showed that more Britons are now taking an 'improve rather than move' approach, with loft conversions proving particularly popular.
