Kitchen benefits highlighted by celebrity chef
04 November 2008
Cookery guru Prue Leith has emphasised the importance of a well-designed kitchen to a happy family life.In an article for dbonline.co.uk, Ms Leith, a writer, businesswoman, TV cook and owner of a Michelin-starred restaurant, has emphasised the need for space in the modern family home - and suggests that developers are loath to grant it.
This, she believes, makes it particularly hard to interact as a family, and could lead to unruly behavior in young people.
"If you are constantly tripping over bikes in the passage and toys on the floor, if you have no privacy, no escape from teenage music, no means of bringing the family together for a home roasted chicken, how can you possibly be courteous?" she asked in the article on the website.
"You cannot civilise children in an uncivilised environment."
With her culinary background, Ms Leith is most concerned about the lack of available cooking space and makes the link between unsold properties and those without an adequate area for preparing a healthy meal.
As homes with an enviable kitchen are more likely to sell quicker and at a higher price than those with an inadequate area for cooking and eating, the benefits associated with kitchen improvements are obvious.
Ms Leith, a judge on the BBC TV show Great British Menu, received an OBE in 1989.
