Modular homes 'more eco-friendly'
29 April 2008
Prefabricated properties assembled on location are far more environmentally-friendly than regular homes, an industry expert has stated.John Fitzgerald, director of the modular housing specialist Spacebox, insists that the prefabrication process not only provides better insulation, but also produces less waste.
And due to advances in the modular housing industry, homes can be designed to either blend in with the street, or stand out as an architectural feature.
"Because it's built in a factory, there are fewer faults and leaks and fewer areas where you've got weak insulation points," explained Mr Fitzgerald.
"The insulation quality tends to be far superior to anything built on site."
According to figures from rival modular builders Yorkon, 96 per cent of prefabricated projects are delivered on time and 94 per cent on budget.
This compares to 63 per cent of traditional builds in the UK on time and 49 per cent on budget, according to data from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
Homeowners looking to reduce energy costs and diminish their carbon footprint are advised to consider extra insulation, including the latest double glazing technology.
