Most Brits would prefer to live in the country
06 May 2008
The majority of Brits would be prepared to suffer long commutes in order to enjoy the calm of the countryside, a new poll suggests.Almost six in ten consumers believe that living in the country is better for your health, according to the Yorkshire Bank survey, while just over a quarter prefer the hustle and bustle of city life.
The lender found that 72 per cent are prepared to spend over an hour on their daily commute so as to escape inner-city living.
And more than six tenths of those in their 20s are adamant that living in town is not vital to career progression.
"Potential buyers are savvier than ever and are really doing their homework when it comes to finding the perfect location to buy," observed Yorkshire Bank's head of retail, Gary Lumby.
"In contrast to the recent trend of buying, improving and moving on, many buyers are concentrating on finding a home where they can settle long-term and build a future for themselves and their family."
Despite the national desire to escape to the countryside, just one in five Londoners said they would be unwilling to give up life in the big smoke.
For those keen to stay in the city, double glazing is one of the best ways of minimising the impact of outside noise.
