New home security initiative
21 April 2008
Broxbourne Council in Hertfordshire has launched a free range of burglary prevention kits to help keep homeowners educated about the benefits of home security. The borough has recently seen a decline in crime rates, but local enforcement agencies are keen to keep it that way, with tips on safeguarding properties against thieves.
The packs themselves contain an indelible black marker pen, as well as a special ultra-violet marker, to label property, plus tamper-proof labels and a window sticker.
Crime prevention leaflets are also within the kits, which were created by Broxbourne's Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership and funded by the Home Office.
One of the key focuses of the new initiative is to encourage locals to keep garden equipment safely secured, due to a recent spate of shed break-ins.
The main lesson from police and county council representatives is that homes should be as unappealing to opportunist burglars as possible.
Visible home security systems can help deter burglars, as can tough locks, double glazing and outdoor lights triggered by movement.
Homeowners are always urged to keep valuables such as electrical equipment or car keys well out of sight in order to discourage thieves.
