Now is 'good time' to build eco-home
15 May 2008
Now is a "good time" to construct a sustainable self-built property, according an expert at the eco-homes specialist Green Moves UK.With a growing emphasis on the need to cut carbon emissions and help protect the environment, the market for green properties is expanding rapidly.
Green Moves managing director Julian Brooks reports that "a growing number of people... [are] seeking an eco-plot or a property they can convert to a greener home".
And planning officers are more likely to give the go-ahead for eco-friendly projects than regular housing.
Planners "do look more favourably upon exceptional sustainable projects compared to just any old house builder putting up their standard fare," explained Mr Brooks.
According to the government, new developments "should be planned to limit carbon dioxide emissions", as well as positioned and designed to "minimise future vulnerability in a changing climate".
To achieve these goals, eco-homes should be fitted with double glazing, draught insulation and sufficient cavity wall and roof insulation to minimise heat loss and make the best use of energy.
Solar panels, wind turbines and water drainage units are newer innovations that help recycle energy and water in order to reduce a home's impact on the environment, while also reducing utility bills.
"It's a good time to try and get hold of your plot or your old derelict property to knock it down and rebuild," concluded the Green Homes managing director.
"The indications we are getting within the planning system is that the planners look much more favourably upon an ultra sustainable self-build than they would on just a conventional rabbit hutch."
