Residents urged to step up home security after spate of burglaries

15 April 2008
A recent spate of burglaries in and around Exeter have led the police to encourage homeowners to step up their home security.

The towns of Heaveitree, Whipton and Newtown have experienced considerably more break-ins than average in recent weeks, leading to calls for greater vigilance.

In the majority of cases, opportunist thieves targeted properties with windows and doors left open. One in five of the burglaries took place while owners were at home.

Local detective constable Paul Taylor is urging residents to review their home security and take sensible steps to prevent becoming a victim.

"Even though the weather is getting nicer and the natural reaction is to start opening up the windows and doors, people need to think before they leave a room unattended," he told the Exeter Express & Echo.

"It is important for them to make use of any existing security systems. If there is an alarm installed, then it should be set when they leave the house."

Keeping valuables out of sight and making your home difficult to access will reduce the risk of being targeted by opportunists.

Home security systems act as much as a deterrent as a alarm. Double glazing will also make windows more impregnable and less appealing to burglars.ADNFCR-1051-ID-18551731-ADNFCR
