Save money and save the planet
21 April 2008
Adopting green measures in the home can help consumers cut heating, electricity and grocery bills by £400 per year, according to Nigel's Eco Store.Nigel Berman, the firm's eponymous founder, insists that simple and affordable changes around the house can not only lower fuel costs, but also help save the planet.
"I think that money-saving and energy-saving kind of go hand-in-hand," he explained.
In terms of helping to protect the environment, "the first thing that we all need to do is still reduce our energy usage," the expert continued, pointing out that households account for a quarter of all carbon emissions.
Straightforward measures include switching to energy-saving light bulbs, which might cost more than regular bulbs, but help cut costs in the longer term.
The "eco ethos", Mr Berman explained, was adopting products that work more efficiently and last longer.
"We need to switch our thinking into thinking about the whole life of a product and the fact that things of good quality may cost a bit more, but they last longer," he concluded.
Professionally-installed double glazing conforms neatly to that ethos, helping to retain heat, lower fuel consumption and lower bills over an extended period.
