Simple steps to eco-friendly homes

04 September 2008
Energy efficiency and sustainability are the factors homeowners need to consider when trying to make their properties more eco-friendly, according to an expert.

Isobel McKenzie-Price, editorial director of Ideal Home Magazine, said Britons should take simple measures such as turning off lights in empty rooms in order to make their properties greener.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the prime minister has pledged to ensure all new homes being built will be carbon neutral by 2016.

But Ms McKenzie-Price said making your own property more eco-friendly does not have to be complicated.

She said: "Even simple measures like turning off lights in empty rooms, switching off appliances rather than leaving them on standby, and insulating doors, roofs and windows can cut energy consumption and bills.

"If you can, buy pieces for your home which are made locally, from sustainable materials and which will last. Consider what you're buying and whether you'll be tired of it by next spring – or whether it will be a piece you can live with for years to come."
