The house is secure and being looked after
David Smith's CCTV system
David Smith* lives in Surrey. In 2003, he decided to install CCTV for the first time to monitor the area outside his home. “I had just bought a new car which would be parked out on the street,” says Mr Smith, “and so wanted to install CCTV to monitor the car as well as provide us with extra home security.
“I chose an Everest system because it was a trusted name that had been around for a long time. The cameras on my system are reliable Philips ones and what is particularly good is that they’re very small and unobtrusive, while still being noticeable enough to deter burglars.
“Not only would I highly recommend their system, but when the guys came round to install it, it only took the two of them a day and they were very good, tidy and reliable and they didn’t leave any mess at all when they’d finished. Plus, when I wasn’t happy with where one of the cameras was going to be placed, they were more than happy to listen to me and move it to somewhere that suited me better.”
Mr Smith’s CCTV has already shown its worth. In December 2004, Mr Smith was leaving his house to go on holiday when he noticed something in the road.
“I bent down to pick it up and found a Rolex watch stand sitting in the middle of the road,” says Mr Smith. “I was about to leave it with a neighbour in case someone came back for it, when the police came past in a car and asked if we had seen anyone go past. We said no, but showed them the watch stand. It turned out that there had been a robbery at the High Street jewellers and the stand was from there.
“I offered to take a look at the CCTV and lo and behold on rewinding ten minutes the cameras clearly showed a youth matching the description of the robber. Using this evidence, the police were able to search the nearby area and arrest the man. The tape was handed to the police for use as evidence if they were able to prosecute.”
Other cases where the cameras have come in useful include helping to identify a scaffolding company whose workmen had ruined the side of a neighbour’s car with their truck and then driven off. It also proved vital in helping Mr Smith prove that a local car dealer had caused around £800 worth of damage to his car on returning it, by hitting the curb outside his house.
Finally, Mr Smith says of his CCTV, “The system is very easy to operate and the fact that you can record up to one month’s worth of footage at a time means that you can be sure that the house is secure and being looked after when you’re away, giving you great peace of mind.”
