Commonly Asked Questions

  • +
What are the different types of casement windows?

There are several types of casement windows that generally differ in how the window opens:

    • Side hung - Hinged at the side is the most common type of casement window and the opener will swing outwards.
    • Single casement - The most basic window style has one frame and is usually side-hung.
    • Double frame or french casement - Two side-hung casement frames with handles in the middle that opens outwards to each side and create a large aperture (with central mullion).
    • Top hung or awning window - Hinged at the top of the frame the window swings outwards from the bottom. This style is perfect for wet climates as they stop rain from entering the room.
    • Bottom hung or hopper window - Hinged at the bottom of the frame the window drops open from the top of the frame. This allows plenty of ventilation and is a safer option for upper-floor windows.

What is a flush casement window?

A flush casement window is the same as a casement window except for how the window opener sits on the outside frame.

A standard casement window opener sits proud from the frame when closed.

A flush casement window opener sits flush into the frame when closed.

The benefit of a flush casement is the enhanced weatherproofing and draughtproofing. But the flush casement gives a sleek appearance and is becoming very popular as a contemporary style when combined with a slim aluminium frame.

  • +
What are the different parts of a casement window?

    Parts of a casement window

    Parts of a casement window

    • Window Frame - holds the casement window in place.
    • Window Sill (or cill) - forms the bottom of the window frame and directs water away from the frame.
    • Casement - is the part of the window that opens, securing the glazing in place.
    • Mullion - is the vertical strip that divides separate window units.
    • Transom - is the horizontal strip that divides separate window units.
    • Lock Handle – the window's locking mechanism is located on the casement jamb.
    • Trickle Vent – at the top of the window, trickle vents consist of a grill on the outside and a closing vent on the inside.
  • +
Are casement windows the best type of window?

Casement windows are incredibly versatile with so many different configurations. They can be styled traditionally, or contemporary with different materials, so they suit any type of property.

The only limitation of a casement window is the size of the opening panel. Due to the weight of the glass, an opening panel hinge has to support the window so it can only be a certain size. This is why casement windows are configured with different-sized panels.

  • +
What style of house suits casement windows?

Casement windows are versatile and can be configured and styled to suit almost all architectural styles and property ages.

Cottages and traditional properties suit a timber framed casement window, sometimes with Georgian bars.

Modern builds suit flush casement windows with aluminium frames.

00s, 90s new builds and 60s, 70s, 80s properties all suit uPVC casement windows.

  • +
Are casement windows out of style?

Casement windows in different materials look completely different and can be adapted to suit any style of property. A flush casement window with a slim aluminium frame is contemporary and suits modern houses.

Casement windows will not go out of style as they are so versatile and can look ultra modern or traditional.

  • +
How much do casement windows cost?

Casement windows are the cheapest window style and a white uPVC casement window is the most economical option, costing between £600 to £1,800 depending on size, glazing design and how many are being replaced in the property.

The average price for new windows is anything between £600 to £3,600 per window, depending on options.

What types of glass are available for windows?

You may be surprised by the number of glass options for your new windows, and it is important to understand which would be best suited for your requirements. Standard glass is called ‘Low E’ and is a great all round option for energy efficiency. Low Iron glass offers high clarity and energy efficiency. Toughened glass is five times stronger than regular glass and laminated glass, contains a plastic interlayer offering better insulation and resistance against damage.
