What would make you go green?

Some two-thirds of Brits are not fully confident that their home is as energy efficient as it could be. Yet seven out of ten don't plan to do anything about it over the next year.

However, with energy bills still high it would be expected that many would be planning to take alternative action to save money.

Unfortunately, uptake of the Green Deal, which is designed to allow people to invest in energy efficient technology without having to meet upfront costs, has thus far being disappointing.

With the government relying on the Green Deal to create jobs and retrofit UK housing stock to reduce emission levels by 2020, lack of interest in the programme is a cause for concern.

Paul Ellis, chief executive of the Ecology Building Society, explained: "The scale of the challenge of making our housing stock more energy efficient should not be underestimated.

"We fully support the Green Deal's ambition to reduce the carbon foot print of the nation's properties, but we're concerned that the scheme lacks a focus on customer incentives and promoting a systematic approach to retrofit."

Consequently, it may be time to ask what it would take to make Brits go green.

Mr Ellis speculates that mutuals and other mortgage lenders may hold the key, as retrofit discounts may incentivise people to improve the energy efficiency of their property.

If energy efficiency leads to a reduction in mortgage bills, in addition to energy costs, it may encourage people to take out what is effectively a loan under the scheme, as an investment in financial security.

What's more, as energy efficiency increasingly comes to set a premium for house prices in the property market, the Green Deal may be seen as a great way to support improvements.

Currently, only 35 per cent of Brits are unaware of free or discounted energy efficiency measures that are available.

The Green Deal will be vital in increasing the knowledge of homeowners and changing attitudes towards energy efficiency but it is essential that it is marketed correctly and is consumer focused.ADNFCR-1051-ID-801271391-ADNFCR
