Calls for solar water heating action

The Microgeneration Council has called on the government to do more to push technologies such as solar water heating.

In its end of term report, the organisation has looked at the performance of the coalition government and concluded that more needs to be done to encourage homeowners to install renewable heating solutions.

The Renewable Heat Incentive would be one way of doing so and although it has found favour among some ministers, plans to implement it have been thwarted by the treasury, according to the organisation.

Dave Sowden, chief executive of the Micropower Council, said: "Almost 130 members of parliament have called on the government to confirm the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive for Microgeneration.

"Ministers in Department of Energy and Climate Change have been inundated with briefings (including at least one established company implementing 40 per cent cuts in its salary bill) and urgent requests for clarity on this key policy before this industry starts to fall apart. Despite this, the Treasury's iron shutters remain down."

Announced by the previous government, the Renewable Heat Incentive was originally interned to come into effect in April 2011.ADNFCR-1051-ID-800018803-ADNFCR
