The yuppie generation have turned into guppies, according to a new survey.
Insurer RIAS has identified a new demographic of green-minded over-50s who are now more interested in gardening fruit and veg than reaping profits.
Home improvements are particularly important, with four per cent of this group installing
solar panels.
This is one way to generate money and cut bills while also helping the environment.
The survey also found that nine in ten also invested in energy-saving light-bulbs, while more than a third (38 per cent) used water meters.
Just under a quarter (24 per cent) installed a water-saving showerhead, while 11 per cent installed a grey water recycling system.
This generation are also keen gardeners, with 28 per cent using their garden or an allotment to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
Commenting on the findings, the managing director of RIAS Janet Connor said: "This generation actively campaign and make a difference to issues they care about and believe in, and it's these actions and behaviours that will rub off on younger generations and hopefully set them on their way to a greener lifestyle."
