Celeb culture 'has always influenced home improvement'

04 September 2008
Celebrity influence over home decor is nothing new, according to a leading interior designer.

Research out last month suggested that Britons are becoming increasingly desperate to emulate the fancy kitchens, living rooms and design of the A-List homes they see in glossy magazines.

Research from the British Retail Consortium shows the DIY and hardware market has gone up 17.7 per cent in the past five years as Britons take control of how they want their house to look.

But according to designer Jason Pardesi of Apropos, celebrities have always been an influence.

He said: "Celeb culture has had a massive impact on interior design... celebrities generate an unparalleled amount of interest and people want to see how they live their amazing lives of luxury.

"Magazines and the TV have always played a massively influential role in the style and content of people's houses and they are only too happy to show the public how Cliff Richard lives in his Docklands penthouse."

He said television programmes such as Grand Designs have made people increasingly aware of how others live and can "help them in their constant quest to better themselves".
