Double glazing 'can reduce energy bill by £110'

20 November 2008
With fuel poverty set to soar in the UK during the winter, a new survey has championed the role that double glazing can play in reducing energy-related expenses.

Research shows that the average energy bill could soar to £1,406 in 2009 - compared to £676 in 2005 - but the Energy Savings Trust says there are a number of protective measures available to homeowners.

In particular, the body found that fitting double glazing can reduce annual bills by £110, while ensuring that doors are properly draught-proof and using energy-saving light bulbs are also big savers.

Property expert Anna Ryder Richardson said: "It is quite clear that this winter we are all going to feel the pinch when it comes to paying our energy bills.

"So more than ever before we need to think about what steps we can take to make our houses more energy efficient.

"By making some simple energy-saving improvements, such as installing quality double-glazing or loft insulation, homeowners could really slash their costs whilst helping the environment at the same time."

Ms Richardson - of 'Changing Rooms' fame - also explained that the property market is becoming increasingly dictated by environmental issues, so such changes will appeal to potential buyers.ADNFCR-1051-ID-18887539-ADNFCR
