Safe as Houses - National Home Security Month
Nowhere is security more important than in your own home, especially with the Office for National Statistics reporting that 6.4 million crimes happened against households just last year.
From traditional security solutions to the latest alarm systems with remote access, there is a wide range of options to choose from to ensure your property is safe and secure.
Start with the main entry points to your home as doors and windows are the easiest way for intruders to gain entry. Open windows are a gift to opportunists, so a minute spent checking everything is closed before you leave the house will pay dividends.
But it is also important to install windows, whether uPVC or timber, that have the highest standard of security features. Choose a design with multi-point locks and hinge-side brackets for extra protection. You can keep cool by opting for a design with a night vent position that allows air to circulate whilst the window remains locked. Secure beading will also prevent the glass panes being removed from the outside, lessening the risk of intruder entry.
Doors should ideally be fitted with a high quality cylinder lock, approved by the British Standards Institute, that engages into the door frame to create a tight seal all the way round. This will prevent common methods of breaking and entering such as bumping, snapping, picking and drilling. For extra protection, choose toughened safety glass in door panels. Security chains will add an extra level of security whilst a spy-hole will allow you to see exactly who’s at the door.
Fitting an alarm system is a great way to secure your home but also acts as a deterrent to burglars. Modern systems have many features and are fully customisable to suit your needs. Control panels are easy to use with key fobs to activate and disarm the alarm. Sensors are fitted to windows and doors to detect of unauthorized entry, and remote monitoring gives you peace of mind if you are away.
