Top hung windows are windows that swing open from the bottom and are hinged at the top. This style of uPVC window needs to have enough friction on the hinge so that the window will stay open. But, not too much friction so it’s difficult to open. A common issue on top hung windows is that they swing shut because the hinges are too loose to keep them open.

Top hung windows have hinges with a friction stay. The friction stay can be tightened or loosened on the hinge and this applies or releases pressure to hold the window open or to loosen the window hinge.

To adjust a top hung window, you need to locate the friction stay on the hinge and adjust the screws in the right direction.

How to Adjust a Top Hung uPVC Window

Follow the simple steps below to locate the hinge on your top hung window and how to adjust the screws in the right way so your window stays open (or closed).

Step 1

First, you will need to open up your window till you can see and access your windows hinges.

Step 2

Then you will need to locate the friction screw on your hinge.

Step 3

Once located with your screwdriver tighten the friction hinge very slightly. Make sure to do the same amount of adjustment on the opposite hinge - it doesn’t have to be exact.

Step 4

Begin to test the adjustment by pushing the window out and in.

Step 5

Depending on your preferred outcome keep loosening and tightening until it’s easier to open.

** If the window becomes too stiff DO NOT worry, just twist the friction screw the opposite way and it will loosen back up again.
