HOW TALL IS A DOOR?

UK doors come in a range of standard sizes along with non-standard ones, which we outline below.

How tall is a door? How tall is a door?

Although it's common for doors in the UK to come in a height of 6ft 8in (2.032m), there is no universal door height as such. This is because doors do not just come in a range of styles but they're also fitted to a wide variety of properties. With that said, they do come in a range of standard sizes. We've looked into average door height along with standard and non-standard door sizes for UK doors, so you can find the right size replacement door for your home.

Standard height of front and back doors

Front and back doors don't come in one standard size, they come in several. Standard height sizes for external doors begin at 80 inches (2.03m) and go up as high as 8ft (2.44m) tall. However, the most common standard size for a front door is 80 inches (2.03m) in height and 36 inches (0.91m) wide. Doors of this size will fit into an opening that is roughly 82 ½ inches (2.1m) high and 38 inches (0.96m) wide. The reason why the opening is slightly larger is to account for the jamb and the floor covering.

Is there a minimum door height?

Yes, but only in certain cases. The International Residential Code specifies that the primary door in the home must be at least 80 inches tall (2.03m). It also states that the door must be a minimum of 36 inches (0.91m) wide. In most cases, the primary door will be your front door.

How tall are internal doors in the UK?

This will depend on which part of the UK you are in. For example, the most common door height in England and Wales is 1981 (78 inches), but in Scotland, the average door height is 2040mm (80.3 inches).

Standard height of French doors in metres

The traditional solution for transitioning between your home and garden, French doors add classic charm to any home they're fitted upon. The standard height for them is 2.02 metres (79.5 inches) and such doors are usually 6ft (1.83m) wide.

What is the standard height for bifold doors?

As standard, bifold doors are only slightly taller than internal doors. The standard height for them is usually 2.1m (82.68 inches) or 2.09m (82.28 inches), although their width can vary considerably depending on the size of the aperture. If you require something taller, however, there's a good chance that the doors will need to be specially manufactured. If you require either standard or made-to-measure bi-folds, however, we at Everest can provide you with both.

Standard height of sliding patio doors in metres

Another excellent solution for brightening up your home and bringing the outside in is patio doors. They come in a standard height of 2.094m (82.44 inches), which also accounts for their frame. Like bi-folds, however, they can also be specially made to smaller and larger sizes to meet your spatial requirements.

How tall are garage doors?

The most common height for a garage door is 2.134 metres (84 inches or 7ft). However, with many people driving large vehicles like 4 x 4's nowadays, it's quite common for homeowners to require a garage that is taller than this. It's also important to bear in mind that the drive through height for a garage door is almost never the same as the ordering height. It's also possible for garages to be built up to 3 metres (118.11 inches) high, although these are more commonly found on commercial premises than your average residential property.

How to measure up the height of a replacement door?

When buying a replacement door, it's essential to get one that will fit the opening. The best way to do this is to measure the inside of each vertical side of the frame and whichever length is the longest will determine what height you require the door to be. However, make sure to allow for additional room to account for any floor covering.

Once you've got yourself a door height in mind, we recommend you check out the standard door sizes that we outlined earlier to see if there's one that will fit. After doing this, your next step should be to get a free, no-obligation quote for it from us here at Everest.

What about non-standard door sizes?

Of course, standard-sized doors will not be suitable for every property. For example, period homes are often fitted with doors that are slightly smaller than the standard size. In certain cases, they might also be an irregular shape.

If you require a slightly smaller door or one that is a unique shape, there's a good chance it will need to be made to measure. This is especially true if the door is built from uPVC or aluminium, because neither of these doors can be trimmed down to size. However, it is possible to trim wooden doors down to size.

Taller doors will almost certainly need to be made specially because it's not possible to add material onto a standard size door.
