How to Replace a uPVC Window Handle That's Broken

Our step-by-step guide and video shows you how to change the handle on a uPVC window.

How to replace a window handle

A question we are sometimes asked is how to fix a uPVC window handle that's broken. Not a common issue, but this can happen from rough wear and tear so that the handle loosens and might become difficult to turn and lock. If this happens, we recommend that you replace the window handle unit.

To change the window handle is a relatively quick and easy job – but only if you are replacing the window handle with the same style. It’s essential to check that the new replacement window handle will fit into the holes on the uPVC window and that the spindle is the same size.

We recommend that to replace a window handle on a uPVC window, you use the exact same handle from the manufacturer. At Everest, we use handles that are universal on our double glazed windows to fit the screw holes and you can even change the colour of your window handle.

To replace the window handle with a different style and size might not be possible depending on your window as you might not be able to drill new holes to fix the handle to the window.

Once you have your replacement window handle, the job only takes five minutes with a screwdriver. Watch our Everest Expert in the video below to walk you through the steps of changing the handle on a uPVC window. You can also read the instructions below.

Remove the screw caps from the handle using a thin and narrow object, for example, a flat-headed screwdriver or a butter knife.

Step 4

Once removed unscrew the top and bottom screws of your handle. While you are removing you will need to keep hold of the handle in case it falls as you don't want the handle to break further or fall and hurt you.
