6 ways to turn your garage into a man cave

Date: 08/11/2013

If you think your garage is just for storing your car, think again – it’s about to become your favourite room in the house. Every man needs a man cave, where you can escape from the soaps or the washing up for an hour or two. That said, there are a few essentials that every cave needs, and here’s a list of the things that’ll make up the foundations of your own small slice of paradise.

1. Television

It almost goes without saying, but whether you’re having friends over for the match, or are just in need of some quality time with the latest videogame release, a TV is essential. Particularly exciting are the range of Smart TVs from companies like Samsung and LG, providing access to online catchup services and social networks at the touch of a button. The bigger the better – screens exceeding 60″ are increasingly commonplace on the market, while a HD projector will look right at home if you have an even larger space.

2. Games console

Next up is the games console. These are no longer the reserve of teenage boys, with favourites like GTA and FIFA attracting players of all ages. It might soon be time to upgrade, and with the PS4 and Xbox One just around the corner, there’s plenty of choice. Alternatively, you can roll back the years and pick up a retro console for an unbeatable nostalgia buzz. If that’s not vintage enough for you, perhaps your own arcade machine will hit the spot.

3. Fridge

Plenty of storage for drinks is another essential feature of your sanctuary. You’ve got plenty of options in this department, but a mini fridge isn’t going to cut it. Instead, get a tall freezer unit or wine cooler so you can store a wider selection of beverages. For a more opulent choice, the Kegerator allows you to pull your own ice-cold pints of lager – perfect for your very own garage bar.

4. Roomba

This automated cleaning machine will handle wood floors, carpets, linoleum and anything in between. With a rechargeable battery and motion sensors to avoid obstacles, it’ll give you one less thing to worry about when unwinding in your lair. The Roomba isn’t entirely popular with pets, though, so it’s best to keep your pup out of the way when it’s time to tidy up.

5. Apple TV

An essential addition if you’re looking to keep clutter to a minimum. With this palm-sized gadget, you can wirelessly stream your iTunes content from any Apple device in 1080p high definition, as well as third-party services like Netflix, Sky News and Youtube. It’s also a handy way to play music and view photos on your television with minimum fuss.

6. Armchair

Last but not least, no den is complete with your own personal throne. Anything goes here – whether you’re looking for a seat with in-built speakers, vibrating massagers, drinks holders or a recliner, nothing less than your dream chair will do.
