What Is A Georgian Front Door?
Georgian front doors are solid timber doors with six panels featuring traditional furniture.
The Georgian style actually spans four successive reigns of Kings from 1714-1820. It’s a classical architectural style very reminiscent of London and many spa towns such as Leamington Spa, Bath and Harrogate. The styling was inspired by classic principles of proportion, balance and symmetry taken from Greek and Roman architecture. Georgian houses tend to be large detached dwellings, villas and period townhouses and usually have a listed building or conservation area status.
The Georgian style has high ceilings in the rooms downstairs which feature large windows with smaller upper-floor windows. The brick used is either red, yellow or pale stone. The front door is quite dominant in Georgian properties with it being seen as a display of wealth and grandeur.
The Georgian grand six-panel door has a fanlight above and can be framed by columns. The door furniture consists of a large brass or chrome knocker and a round door knob. Georgian doors are always painted in classic colours of black, dark blue and red. Perhaps the most famous example of a Georgian door is Number 10 Downing Street.
An original Georgian front door can be replaced with a composite panel door, or a new wooden door.
