Porch FAQs

At Everest, we understand that choosing a new porch can be a daunting task. So to help you here are some frequently asked questions that you might find useful.

How big can you build a porch without planning permission?

In most local authorities, you don't need planning permission as long as the area does not exceed three square metres, is not more than three metres above ground level or within two metres of any boundary and highway. For anything outside these, a full planning application will be necessary. However If you live in a house which is a listed building, it is likely that you will need Listed Building Consent for any building operations.

Does a porch need foundations?

This will be highly dependent on the design chosen but in general a Porch consists of low level dwarf walls which if incorporated into your design will require foundations.

Should a porch be the same colour as your house?

There is no rule of thumb when it comes to the colour or design of your porch. That said, we would advise that you are mindful of kerb appeal and the surrounding properties so that you can ensure that any finished porch enhances the value of your home.
