Commonly Asked Questions

What does uPVC stand for?

uPVC stands for Unplasticised Poly Vinyl Chloride. Also known as vinyl, it is rigid, durable and long lasting material used in the construction industry. Typically, uPVC is used for making pipes and windows, due to its maintenance free properties.

How long do uPVC windows last?

You should expect uPVC windows to last a minimum of 20 years, but with maintenance and varying factors, some windows can have a much longer life than expected.

Window type How long they last Everest guarantee
Double glazed units 25 years Lifetime for condensation and fog
uPVC windows 20-25 years Lifetime for discolouration (white uPVC)
Aluminium windows 45 years 25 years for the profile
Hardwood timber windows 50 years 30 years against rot of the profile

The quality of window frame products varies dramatically between manufacturers and installers. Cheap uPVC will warp and discolour long before a quality uPVC frame would. If frames are not fitted properly, they can be prone to water ingress, damp and draughts that will speed up deterioration.

Can shutters be fitted to uPVC windows?

Shutters can be fitted to uPVC windows in the same way as that for timber frames as these are normally fitted to the internal fabric of the building rather than directly to the window frames. We'd advise a specialist company to ensure that correct clearances from handles and to hinges to enable easy opening of the windows for ventilation.

Can I fit uPVC windows in a conservation area?

If you live in a conservation area, you need to check with your local planning office about limitations for window replacement. There may be a note in your Deeds about any restrictions.

Usually, in a conservation area, any changes to the fabric of the building have to be made like-for-like. And that will include materials.

If you currently have timber sash windows, you have to replace with timber sash windows.

Not all local planning offices follow the same rule, so always check to find out what you can and can't do.
