Sash horns

On the underside of the top sash section, there is an optional component known as a horn. There are two types available: plant on horns and through horns. Through horns offer a richer more authentic aesthetic with the bottom section ‘butting’ against the side sections.

Wooden sash windows are beautiful but require years of painting and can experience problems that cause the sashes to stick, making them difficult to open and close. Everest uPVC Sliding Sash windows are low maintenance, they require no painting and with the added benefit of spring balances they are easy to slide up and down. In addition, with highly efficient double glazing they will help to keep your home warmer.

Modern security features on a traditional window

Everest take the extra step to make sure our traditional design provides the most up to date levels of security. We offer two levels of security with both top and bottom sash restrictors so windows can be left open for ventilation whilst restricting access, as well as fitch locks. Fitch locks are traditional sash locks but are key lockable and secured into galvanised steel reinforcement and adhere to the high standards.

Smooth running and easy cleaning

Everest uPVC sliding sash windows are fitted with spring balances, this assists the lifting and closing of the sash window so the window can be opened and closed with minimum effort. We then use advanced brush seals on the running surfaces to facilitate easy opening. In addition, Everest sash windows offer a tilt-in-hinge design which makes cleaning the outside of the window from the inside very simple, saving on window cleaning costs and an ideal solution for top-floor windows.

Spiral balance

A spiral balance system sits within the frame and uses a series of springs to counter balance the sash to ensure a smooth opening mechanism. This spiral balance system replaces the cords and weights system used in traditional sliding sash windows, giving a slimmer window profile resulting in more sunlight and warmth. Traditional sash windows are likely to be fitted as 'box sashes' and replacing these traditional sashes for uPVC is a specialist task which must be performed by a qualified installer. Everest installers are trained to the highest standards and ensure that our uPVC sash windows stand the test of time.

Internal glazing bead

All Everest uPVC windows are fitted with an internal glazing bead for two reasons. Firstly, it ensures the window is much more secure than if the glazing bead was put on the outside. The glazing holds the glass in place and if it is inside your house then it prevents potential unwanted visitors from removing the beading and glass and gaining access to the property. Secondly, it means that glazing can be fitted from inside the property, removing the need for glass to be carried up ladders or onto scaffolding and making installation a much safer process.

    Before you look to replace sash windows with casement windows it is important you check with your local authority. In some instances, for example if you live in a conservation area or a listed building, it may not be possible to place your sash windows with a modern casement window design or you may need to apply for planning permission. You will also need to consider your local area, to ensure that any change you make is in keeping with your neighbours. Additionally, it is worth considering if replacing your sash windows with casement windows would make the property less desirable for future owners.

    The quality of window frame products varies dramatically between manufacturers and installers. Cheap uPVC will warp and discolour long before a quality uPVC frame would. If frames are not fitted properly, they can be prone to water ingress, damp and draughts that will speed up deterioration.

    Can I fit uPVC windows in a conservation area?

    If you live in a conservation area, you need to check with your local planning office about limitations for window replacement. There may be a note in your Deeds about any restrictions.


    Usually, in a conservation area, any changes to the fabric of the building have to be made like-for-like. And that will include materials.


    If you currently have timber sash windows, you have to replace with timber sash windows.


    Not all local planning offices follow the same rule, so always check to find out what you can and can't do.
